Week 9
I’m interested in exploring the idea of an imprint for my memorials project. Imprint initially came to mind when I thought of memorials as it can be a personal touch that you leave on something and doesn’t necessarily have to be physical but can also be emotional. The marking of an imprint can act as a memory that can be triggered through any of the senses; seeing, touching, smelling, hearing and tasting.

I want to start experimenting with weaving, as I believe
this technique has a strong connection with memory because you can incorporate
different strands of thought and life into a piece. Weaving would communicate
my idea of memory and imprinting as it would enable me to visually express how
memories can be intertwined and overlapped with one another. I’m considering
combining various materials into the weave to convey different meanings and
directions. Certain colours could mean particular memories and the patterns of
the material could suggest the strength or importance these memories have in
certain people’s lives. I’ve started researching some artists who experiment
with weaving and came across Elaine Duncan and Suzanne Mwamba (pictured) and
like the patterns that they create with the wool. Particularly in Mwamba’s work
you can see how she incorporates different textured wool into her work, which creates a very tactile and diverse effect.
