Emma Project 3

WEEK 9

As far as memorials go I have done some research into ones that I am particularly interested in. I find that I take a significant liking to ones that I have personally interacted with. I want to do research into 'Ground Zero' in New York and also the memorial at Luna Park for the Waverly College year 8 students that died many years ago. These are two memorials that I have read about previously and have been really interested in. Here are some samples that I have done last week. I experimented with dyeing and bleaching for project one of this semester but didn't take it very far. I like the effect of these works and believe they are a suitable continuation of the 'messy/dirty' portrayal that I am aiming for in my works, inspired by Norma Starzakowna. I want to find a way to incorporate samples like these, continuing with this 'buildings' inspiration and relate to these memorials I am researching.
Here are some materials that I collected from class. I like the roughness of them and the colours. I want to incorporate these materials into my samples.
Here are some samples that are very similar to what I have done in Project 1. It was these samples that really inspired my direction that I have taken with analysing buildings and using geometric shapes. I really find these samples aesthetically pleasing and want to take them further.

In this image, I have folded down black materials and have really really liked what I have come out with. These photos don't do justice to what they look like. I am excited to continue these experiments.

WEEK 10

After my discussion with Rodney in class, I have decided on a few directions that I am planning on taking. I still want to stick with this 'geometric' direction, making illusions of buildings. I also want to research deeper into September 11 and the Twin Tower tragedy. What was the impact of these buildings on the city? What has happened now that they are gone? I have made a small sample of some silouettes of the city. Using rice paper, I have covered sections of the city, giving an illusion of the disappearance of the buildings. I am feeling slightly lost at the moment. Please, if any of you have suggestions, I am all ears. I feel at a creative lull right now. In particular, can anyone suggest techniques that I can use to create the actual two buildings (the twin towers). I want a technique that is more complex than just dyeing or machine stitching!

WEEK 11

This week I have chosen a large sheet of white material as my base, as I have decided that I want to work with large scale. I have also experimented with some printing. I am not really a fan of it, I feel like it is a lot of work and produces a result that looks pretty simple. I know it was just experimenting, but using the bright colours and patterns wasn't a great idea either as I will defiantly not be using these in my final project.
This week I really want to focus on research. I think that if I delve deeper into September 11, I may be inspired creatively and also learn of the most appropriate way to produce my work. I have rented out a documentary on September 11 which I plan to watch this weekend.
For my presentation, I think research is a key component. I want the class to understand and relate to the importance of having a memorial for the Twin Towers.

  1. I think the last photo is the most subtle. It's simple, but could be an elegant piece. Could it be bigger, giving you more space to play with shapes, and spaces? Maybe a 3D piece with cubes and rectangular prisms? Now is probably not the best time to experiment with new techniques and materials. Try to build on what you've been doing so far, but maybe look at it from a new perspective. You'll have more time to develop in new ways next session.
