Seep
silk, lichen, dye, silk threads,
This silk cloth is a layering of meditative techniques
- Stained over a period of weeks with wet lichen, carefully dripped with
diluted dye, worn away with sand paper, repaired and detailed with silk
threads. Each layer is a response to the layer before, marks echoed and
overlapping.
We are all in a dance of constant restructuring,
integrating what we see, feel and learn with what already exists. Imagine if
each new thought left a visible stain or if each sadness wore away threads,
creating a hole, marking our cloth.

Hi Alex, I really love the pattern of this piece. I feel overall the fabric has a softness to it through the delicacy of the silk but also the subtleness of the dyed pattern. looking close at the piece there are lots of hidden details that you have stitched into the piece however i feel that there are still possibilities for more destruction.
ReplyDeletethe slight wearing away of the silk that you have already started to do i think could be pushed further to give the piece a more destructed feel :)
I think the work you have done to the cloth is wonderful and you have achieved some really beautiful results. The contrast between the brown and the blue is also really strong. My favourite part is the tiny hand stiches you have done over some of the blue areas.
ReplyDeleteAre you planning to turn the cloth into anything or continue the staining process? Although the cloth itself is lovely, I think you could take the destruction element further.
I think this piece is really beautiful and ethereal but agree with the previous two comments. The element of destruction is not very visible, and while dyeing and staining is a means of destroying the fabric, I wonder if you could take this further and develop more layers.
