Rebecca

For this project, I started experimenting with burning, using candles and burning different types of materials – silk chiffon, silk organza, calico, lace and paper. I really liked the effect of burning the calico, however found it a hard material to scorch and took longer for it to work compared to the silk fabrics. I also really liked the results of burning paper and the pieces of ashes that were created. My ideas for this project then developed into using these ashes and creating a new piece of fabric, then using the fabric to create another piece which either would be a wall-hanging or garment. I did have some technical concerns with the construction of the ash fabric, and is continuing to experiment with ways to create this – using vlisofix, pva glue and more. My conceptual concerns are more related with end product and how it would relate to the materials I have deconstructed.

  1. Hi Rebecca, looking at the samples that you brought to class i thought that you had lots of possibilities that you could explore. The samples i saw were all lace and i think focusing on one material as inspiration could be great as lace in particular has so many variations. Once you have explored lace then you could possibly bring on other fabrics to compliment the lace.

reading what you have written i feel that you have lots of ideas in mind by focusing in on a few or even a singular materials it might become easer to work though problems that arise and give you a more specific starting point for your destruction and then creation ( or the other way around) :)

  2. The idea of creating new cloth out of ash is very clever and is a good take on destruction/construction. Burning the fabric also has a lot of potential for pattern making and mark making. How will your lace samples you brought to class and the ash fabric come together? Also be wary of ash as the consistency and collection is very difficult to maintain and control because it is such a lightweight material. Try burning lots of fabrics to see which ash is the easiest to handle.

  3. Rebecca,
The idea of using the ash and turning it into a fabric is really beautiful. I'm curious as to how that would work as it seems such a difficult medium to work with. Perhaps you could turn it into paper by mixing it with paper pulp and then creating 3D structures out of it? You could also try painting or drawing with the ash from the burnt fabric.
